What makes a great website?

So you have decided to take your business online and create a website? Or you already have a website that you would like to improve?

Whatever your reasons for needing a website, there are certain things it will need to make it as good as possible. No two websites are the same, however there are some things that are important for every good website. Without these, your website may struggle to be seen.

Here are some of our top tips for creating the perfect website to suit your business.

Planning

You need to have a vision of what you want your website to look like, but this is not the most important factor. Content is king! Not just the content that you update regularly such as blogs or portfolio pieces, but the content of each page too.

You need to think about the overall aim of your website. If you want an ecommerce site, it’s obviously a site for selling your products. If you are a service business, like an electrician, it will be there so that you have an online presence when people are searching for your service. So you will want to stand out from the others in your Industry and let your website reflect your business.

When you have worked out the basic need for your website, you will need to start thinking about what pages and features you will need and what will your website need for you to reach all of your aims. For example, if you are a plumber, you will want customers to be able to contact you so you may want to add a ‘call now’ button on the front page as well as all contact details on a Contact Us page. You may also want to include examples of your previous work, and a list of the services you provide.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is something you may want to consider getting help with if you want your website to rank high on google search.

If this is your first website, all of this can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to! Look up similar websites across the UK and make a list of what you think is great about them so you can discuss this with your web designer. You will also find that any good website builder can offer advice on content and help you understand what’s needed from you.

Easy to Navigate

Think about your type of business, and the main purpose of your business. This needs to be what the customer first sees when they click on your website. If they are visiting your site, they will have an idea of what they are looking for, so make it easy for them!

Use Headings and sub headings, and menus so that the customer can easily navigate around the site to find what they are looking for. Consider having a search bar if you offer a huge range of products or services so they can search for what they need without having to look all around the site. You don’t want them to go elsewhere.

Have you ever clicked on a website and spent ages looking for something only to give up and try another business? It can be very frustrating! For example, you look on a local children’s park website to try and find out the admission price, but there’s no tab with a pricelist as the prices are hidden in amongst a huge amount of text on a different page to the home page. In this scenario, you would probably give up and call the park. The whole point of a website is to give the customer the information they need so they don’t need to call and ask questions. They should know enough about you by visiting your site, to know if they want to visit you or use your services.

Make this easy by having a website that is easy to use, with everything very clear.

Strong Branding

If you have a beautifully designed website, that is easy to navigate, looks great, but your logo is not up to the same standard, this will make the website look bad. You need to have a continuous theme running across the website and this is done by using your branding as a guideline.

Here at Brightbulb Design, we chose to use Bright pink in our branding as we wanted to stand out and be different. This colour is run across our website and we use similar graphics on each page to keep it all together. You see our logo ties in with the design of the website and the branding is more fluid and professional. The last thing people would expect from an accountant’s firm for example, is to have a very professional looking, neutral coloured logo, but a Bright coloured younger looking website.

Your branding needs to tie in with the website design, which is easily achievable if you have a great logo to start with.

Great Design

If you have a fantastic logo, and pride yourself with a well designed brand, you want your website to be the same. A well designed website will look amazing, and be easy to navigate. There will be striking images, brand continuity, and a clear message that you are a great company to work with. Make sure you discuss the design with your designer and make it clear what you want your site to look like.

Mobile Friendly

Any good web designer/developer will make your website, mobile friendly so it still looks, and navigates great on smaller devices. If you don’t ensure this is done, it may persuade people to look elsewhere. More and more of us are using our smartphones to access the web, leaving our restricting wires of our desktops behind.

There are more mobile devices than there are people in the world! In 2014, the number of mobile devices hit 7.22 billion, while the world population stood at 7.2 billion.

Being mobile friendly is in many ways, the most important thing about your website. That is how most people will be viewing your site so make sure it still looks great and works well.
